Where Monarch is stronger
- Investment depth. Monarch connects investment and retirement accounts, and its Plus tier adds gains and losses, tax-lot details, and fund analysis. Budgeteer Pro tracks investment balances only.
- More platforms and regions. Monarch has an Android app and supports Canada. Budgeteer Pro is web and iPhone, with bank sync for U.S. institutions.
- Planning extras. Monarch Plus includes forecasting and business tracking.
- Per-person filters. Shared Views lets couples filter reports and cash flow by who owns each account or transaction.
Where Budgeteer Pro is different
- Real privacy between partners. Mark an account private and it stays out of your partner’s views, totals, and exports. Joint bills stay joint; personal spending stays personal.
- Automatic account checks. Connected bank and credit card accounts are compared with the balance your bank reports. When a difference holds up, Review shows both amounts so you can find the cause.
- A free plan that stays free. Budget by hand, together, without paying. Premium is only for automatic bank sync.
- Built by a practicing CPA, around accuracy: transfers that don’t count as spending, cent-level category splits, and annual bills smoothed into monthly reserves.
Which one fits your household?
Choose Monarch if investment tracking matters most, if either of you uses Android, or if you live in Canada. Choose Budgeteer Pro if each of you wants some accounts kept private, if you want accounts checked against the bank automatically, or if you’d rather budget for free and pay only for bank sync.
